According to President Bola Tinubu, the judiciary is the only institution that can inspire trust in foreign and local investors to make investments in Nigeria.
The National Judicial Institute-organized 2023 All Nigeria Judges Conference of the Superior Courts was officially opened by Tinubu on Monday in Abuja.
The President declared that the executive branch of government alone cannot bring about Nigeria’s economic change. He was accompanied by Mr. Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.
“The court has a crucial role to play in this reform journey; the executive branch is not the only entity responsible for our economic change.
Investors need only have faith in the judiciary to ensure that business conflicts are settled quickly, fairly, and in a way that protects and enhances their investment.
The President declared, “Just this realization will greatly strengthen our position as an investment destination.”
The President stated that he had ordered a review of the upward review of judicial officers’ compensation, even as he reiterated his commitment to guaranteeing the judiciary’s complete independence.
“I have instructed the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission to reconsider its earlier, inappropriate proposal to raise court officers’ salaries by 114%.
“I am hopeful that the process will be completed soon, and I have asked them to come up with a more realistic rate that will reflect the current economic realities.”
Additionally, Tinubu filed an appeal, arguing that attorneys in private practice who had distinguished themselves ought to be given preference when it came to being appointed to the appellate courts.
I firmly believe that the nomination of competent, seasoned, and conscientious private attorneys to the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal would support the development of our appellate courts.
“I think these appointments will have a significant positive impact on Nigeria,” he stated.
