Robert Glidden Death – On November 27, 2022, Robert (Bob) Kenneth Glidden, 81, passed away in Exeter’s Jessica’s House. This sad news was relayed by his relatives. He departed from Lorraine Glidden (née Lovell) after 59 devoted years together. The devoted father of Glidden, Tracy, and Geofrey (Sharon). devoted dad to Olivia, Chloe, and Isaac. Sandra Bell, Robert’s sister, passed away before him. Patricia Strom, Judy McMechan, Ellen Lovell, William Lovell, and Janet Strom survive Robert.
His extended family, nieces, and nephews will be saddened by his passing. Bob, a native of London, Ontario, earned his degree from Western University in 1963. Shortly after graduating from high school, Robert started working as a physical education teacher at East Lambton Secondary School in Watford, Ontario. After three years, ELSS appointed him to director of the athletic department, a position he retained for the remainder of his teaching career. In addition, Bob was a cooperative education, special education, and human geography teacher.
Among his several accolades during his career are the Ontario Sports and Time Games Federation Award of Merit and the Jack Long OPHEA Award for distinguished contribution to OPHEA and physical education in Ontario. Bob was the president of the Lambton Secondary School Athletic Association in addition to coaching cross-country and badminton for WOSSA and LSSAA. The Bob Glidden Annual Coaches Award was instituted in 1997 as a means of commemorating his lifelong dedication to student athletes.
An active member of the LSSAA receives this award. Raising his family in Strathroy, Bob devoted countless hours to coaching minor league baseball, hockey, and basketball. Over the years, he oversaw all ELSS sports as coach. Bob vehemently argued against the elimination of physical education and health programs, citing their significance. His childhood passions for cross-country skiing, golf, and camping are shared by his grandchildren. After retiring to Grand Bend, Ontario, Bob and Lorraine enjoyed playing golf, softball, billiards, shuffleboard, and Legion.
In addition, he was a Legionnaire. He worked as an unpaid volunteer during the Winter Carnival, bingo, and the 2001 Canada Summer Games. Bob and Lorraine traveled to Portugal, Alaska, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Turkey before settling down for several winters in Destin, Florida. The couple traveled to Disney World and the Bahamas as a family for their golden wedding anniversary.
